This past Thursday, we had the privilege of hosting an engaging and insightful workshop with Doug Vail.
Doug Vail, AIA, is a registered architect and visual storyteller who founded and leads the architecture program at Dallas College. He specializes in freehand perspective sketching, graphic presentation, and immersive education.
During the hand rendering workshop, Doug shared practical strategies to elevate architectural sketches and make them more expressive. His techniques included adding reflections, experimenting with blind contour drawing, and using shades of purple or blue to create depth and dimension in shadows. These methods bring energy and authenticity to drawings, encouraging creativity and confidence in the sketching process.
“Instead of having to draw the same object over and over again, suggest the object you are trying to draw. Allow the viewer to fill in the details and do the work for you.
-Doug Vail
Thank you so much, Doug, for delivering such an informative and inspiring workshop. His presentation not only showcased his remarkable talent but also encouraged exploration of new techniques and expansion of his approach to hand rendering.
